Out to Pasture

“Out to Pasture” is a small painting on paper which was made on the floor in converted barn studio in Garana, Romania while on an artists’ residency. It was originally part of a larger composition. The residency provided us with canvases and paper and paint, but all the canvases were pretty small and I was experimenting with making larger pieces. Some of the pieces I made on the residency were therefore triptychs or diptychs, but there were some pretty big thick sheets of paper available so I figured I’d try painting on it.

Over the course of working on the painting the paper got soggy and when I had to move it to make more room for other painters it sort of started to fall apart. It spent some time out in the sun and then almost got rained on and it got blown around. I got pretty frustrated with it and almost gave up on it. Truth be told, the whole painting never really came together compositionally speaking, but it had some good parts. I captured some of those parts in the by pressing small canvases into the still wet paint. Then when the whole thing finally dried, I cut it into smaller pieces and framed them.
