Did you know that Mario Brothers was called Jump Man in Japan before it was released in the US? It’s true. I heard it on the radio the other day. I like how this painting has a upwardly vertical mobility to it; your eye can start at the bottom and climb a number of paths up to the top before falling back down off the cliff in the center top, just like those plumbers trying to rescue their princess in that ancient video game. The pallet is straight out of the mushroom kingdom.

This large exciting painting was created in my Cambridge, MA studio in March of 2012. It is painted on a 1.5″ deep gallery wrap canvas suitable for hanging without a frame.

Like many of my recent paintings, this one started out on the easel, and was moved back and forth between easel and floor a handful of times during the course of its creation. Easel for brushwork and floor for moving large pools of color around. I introduced some complexity in the form of oil and turpentine in the final layer to create a sort of cratered surface in certain areas.

“It’s Like the Aftermath of Catastrophe has Erupted with Catastrophe” is fitted with a hanging wire for easy installation. The fashionable 1 1/2″ gallery wrap canvas will look good with or without a frame. The sides of the canvas are untreated (aside from a layer of white gesso) and show a number of drip marks.

This precious pony of a painting was created in my Cambridge, MA studio in March of 2012. It is painted on a gallery wrapped 1 1/4″ deep stretched canvas suitable for hanging with or without a frame. The painting is supplied with a hanging wire installed so the only hard part for you is figuring out where to put it.

This painting was made mostly in the horizontal position, that is sitting on flat surfaces instead of being propped up with an easel. This allows paint to pool and lets me push it around and scrape at it in more different ways than on the easel, where things tend to start dripping. There are some splatters from thrown paint and also some nice cratered textures which are accomplished by adding oil to still wet acrylic paint. The acrylic dries and the oil is then wiped up, leaving depressions where the oil droplets had pushed the acrylic away. The two large circular forms in this painting were made by placing a couple of mostly empty paint bowls upside down on the canvas, such that the remaining paint drips down to the surface of the canvas.
